If you are designing a new home in Milton Keynes, one of the things that you should consider is installing underfloor heating. This has so many benefits over and above a radiator system, not the least of which is that the heat in the room should be even across the whole room.

At UK Screeds, we are often asked why we install water-based underfloor heating in conjunction with our liquid screed in Gloucestershire, and the answer is actually very simple. Overall, the running costs of water-based underfloor heating are going to be considerably lower than using electricity.

When undertaking any sort of building project there are a few things that are required in all of them. The walls of a building need too be straight and solid, and the roof needs to keep out all types of weather, from a gentle drizzle to an Arctic-type storm such as Arwen which we recently experienced. And the floors need to be flat and level.

There seems to be little doubt that the climate of our world is changing. However, there are a lot of issues surrounding this that seem to have been ignored, not the least of which is that the climate of our planet has been changing for millions of years. Only 400 years ago, the Thames was frozen over, and people were having barbecues on it! That must have been cold!

Installing a floor screed in Newbury correctly is not as easy as you might think. The whole point of a floor screed is that it provides as near a flat and level surface upon which to install the final flooring – whatever it might be – so that the floor will last for as long as the building does.

One of the most important things when constructing a new building of any sort is to ensure that the floor surface is flat and level before you affix the final flooring whatever that may be. This is especially the case when you are going to use tile or stone such as marble for the final flooring because it has to be affixed to the substrate with an adhesive. If that substrate is not level, then when people walk on the tiles they will crack. At that point, the only thing you could do is to remove all the tiles and start over again which would be very expensive.

There is nothing new about underfloor heating. It can be traced back as far as 7,000 years ago when people cut trenches into the floors and covered them with stones which were heated by strategically place fires. However, we have come on with our heating systems since those days, and today your underfloor heating can be either an electric system using electric cables, or a water-based system with heated water being pumped through a system of pipes under the floor.

More and more people today are becoming aware of the benefits of underfloor heating when compared with old-fashioned radiator systems. Apart from any other considerations, they will cost you less to run than radiators do, and if you use a water-based system with heating pipes that will cost you a lot less than an electric system too.

If you are having a new home built in Reading, there are many things to take into consideration. No doubt you will have many ideas for exactly what you want, because otherwise why have a new home built from scratch in the first place?

Once you have a site, you can have your architects design your new home and include everything that you want, whereas if you buy an existing home there are always going to be some things that you are not so keen on, or it may be missing something that you would have liked. Designing your own home gives you everything, so if you can afford to do it, that is the best way to go.

Over the last 20 years or so, anhydrite screeds have grown in popularity. They have several benefits over the traditional sand and cement screeds, being easy to lay, as they are pumped into position, low cost, and fast drying. They do not curl or crack, and you can cover large areas with them easily. They also produce minimal shrinkage, and they are perfect for both domestic and commercial applications. In addition, they are ideal for use with underfloor heating, especially when using water-based heating pipes, as they fully cover the pipes leaving no gaps or voids.
