When laying the final flooring in a new build project it may seem a little trite to say that it needs to be as level and flat as it can possibly be, yet that is always the case. While there is no legal requirement to lay a screed on the substrate before fitting the final flooring, it is the way to go, whether or not you are installing underfloor heating.

If you are considering installing underfloor heating in our home, whether it is a new build or a retrofit, the good news is that you can use pretty much any type of floor finish that you wish. Wood, carpet, vinyl, tile, stone, laminate, even concrete if you wish. However, there are a few things that you need to take into consideration, and these will vary according to the type of flooring finish that you want.

There’s nothing wrong with carpet necessarily, but it seems like there’s more practicality than style to this flooring choice. Enjoying a soft, well maintained and thick carpet is undoubtedly a great joy in colder months, however, we’ve all lived in or visited places where carpet has been less than satisfactory, often worn down and stained.

Sometimes in the business of housebuilding, a way of doing things that has been the same for years may suddenly change. It doesn’t happen all that often, because builders are notoriously reluctant to change when things have worked well for years and only tend to do so if there are possible cost or time-savings, or if they are compelled to do so by changes in the law or by architects who have latched on to a new process.

Many of us tend to think of underfloor heating as a new system but believe it or not it dates back at least 7,000 years! Back in the day, they had trenches cut into the floors with stones laid over the top of them and they were heated by fires in strategic positions.

Many people believe that underfloor heating systems are a relatively new development and are the height of luxury reserved for high-end properties, but nothing could be further from the truth.

Underfloor heating has been around at the very least since the Roman times, and some reports go back further than that. In those days, channels were cut into the floor of a home and were topped with stone which was then heated from fires in specific places.
